Trust the Jamaican American star a.ka. Mr. Lover lover. He had been flown in to boost the Passa Passa dance contest grand finale in Kampala Uganda, but when Shaggy stepped on stage on Saturday night, the crowd forgot that the main event of the day had been a dance contest.
To the last song after a two-hour performance, fans had not gotten enough of the international star and kept asking for more. Where he failed to pull it off with fine live performance, he proved to be the good performer that he is.
There were issues with the rickety sound especially during the opening part of the show, with a galling breaking sound but this did not spoil the fun. Ntinda’s RJ Stars were crowned winners of the dancehall dance competition at about 10p.m.
It was a while before Shaggy came on stage as it was being re-organised for his performance building anxiety, but 10 minutes later Shaggy’s entry was greeted with deafening applause from fans.
Shaggy came on doing a reggae rendition of Church Heathen that fired up fans who raised arms in unison. “There is no place like Uganda,” he went on before confirming the claims of being the true lyrical lover in his platinum album title track, Boombastic that got the female fans screaming as he seductively moved his waistline with the microphone stuck into his pants, going down his zipper line.
Rayvon joined him to do his favourite Big Up and a female back-up singer on Wild Tonight that he originally did with Olivia before taking a short break. He came back on stage for a non-stop session of some of his big hits like Strength of a Woman, which he dedicated to “my sweet Ugandan women”. To crown it all he honoured Bob Marley and did his Redemption Song before doing the honours of crowning the Passa Passa winners.
